Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department Launches New Genealogy Section on TravelOK.com

The new resources make finding your Oklahoma ancestry fun and convenient

The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department is pleased to announce a brand new feature on TravelOK.com which assists visitors seeking to connect with their familial ancestry.

The Genealogy Section on TravelOK.com is a user-friendly tool that guides visitors through a wealth of ancestral research destinations and resources all throughout Oklahoma. Searches on the site are broken down by county with quick links and information available on research libraries that contain copies of the Dawes Rolls, as well as county courthouses that house original land patents dating back to the land run. The new section on TravelOK.com will also direct visitors to genealogical and historical societies, cemeteries, ghost towns and historical school houses, as well as tourism destinations in each county.

Genealogy has recently become one of the most popular hobbies in the United States. As home to 39 federally recognized Indian tribes, countless waves of pioneer settlers, and the genesis of the great Okie migration during the Dust Bowl days, many people tracing their ancestry are finding their ancestors’ footprints right here in Oklahoma.

“With genealogical tourism on the rise nationally, it’s important that Oklahoma be on the forefront of this emerging trend”, said Deby Snodgrass, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. “The new genealogy resources on TravelOK.com make us a major contender by allowing visitors to find their connection to Oklahoma’s rich history.”

To experience what the Genealogy Section of TravelOK.com can do for you, make sure to visit www.TravelOK.com/Genealogy .

Hello All! Here's a bit of what's going on...

The Welcome Reception for Dr. Hull was very well attended, and beautifully done. We're so excited to gain her services as a valuable contribution to our community. Can't wait for the ribbon cutting and the good work she'll be doing!

If anyone is interested in attending a FREE business tax workshop, please follow the link below. Should be chock-full of good info. Let us know if you have any questions, or would like to reserve a spot. http://www.waynokachamber.com/index.php/activities-a-events/event/16-business-tax-workshop

Our next Chamber meeting will be September 8th. We're working toward new advertising opportunities that will benefit all Waynoka businesses, and making other plans for the future. Please make plans to attend!

Our next BIG EVENT is the SandFest & Lawnmower Races. SandFest events will be at the dunes, as usual, but we'll have lots of activities in Downtown Waynoka, too! More details soon. And the Lawnmower Races are ALWAYS fun! A go-cart class is being added, so please get in touch with Joe Hommertzheim if you want to enter in this new class!

Lawn Mower Races=A fun filled evening!

Last night the races went great!  I hope you were able to make it out.  There were a few wrecks that were fun to watch, especially since no one got hurt!!  Special thanks to Joe Hommerzheim for running the show, and to Chesapeake, Woods County, the Fire Department, John Cole and Hutch's Country Market for their donations to make this event a success.

Trail Ride Becoming a Great Tradition

The Cimarron River Stampede Benefit Trail Ride was a lot of fun last weekend.  There were 55 riders who made the trail, with a few minor excitements.  Mike Bowers sure knows how to throw a party!  And he and his hands did an excellent job with the ride.  An extra 25 folks came out for a delicious supper that Joe Hommerzheim and some friends put together.  Then we all sat around a campfire and visited, and there were some talented guitar players and singers who made the evening even more fun.  I'm already looking forward to the next one!

The Rodeo Committee is working hard and really creating some fun events to raise money for this year's rodeo.  Thank you to all of you for your efforts!
